NATIONAL TREE PLANTING DAY
HIGHWAY HIGH SCHOOL
12th May 2018
Highway High School held a tree planting drive on the morning of May 12, 2018 at the school’s compound along Mombasa Road, with a view of joining the country in a nationwide tree planting day that was spearheaded by the president His Excellency Uhuru Kenyatta, who led the official launch of tree planting at Moi Forces Academy. The event at Highway High School was organized by the Agricultural Society of Kenya. Over 500 trees were planted on that day. Kenya’s current forest cover is 7.24% of the land area and the country is way below the required 10%.
Two representatives from Youth Conservation Awareness Program (YCAP) attended the tree planting event at Highway High School. In line with YCAP’s 10,000 kids trees project, YCAP pledged to help the school to nurture the trees that were planted on that day and to work with the environmental club to foster a tree adoption mechanism in the school. Plans are already underway to ensure that the plans are a success.
As the country enters a tree planting season, it was clear that schools can play a big role in ensuring many trees are planted in the country to boost our tree cover. YCAP continues to incorporate more schools into a tree planting program that will ensure the dreams of all Kenyans come true.
