KITUI SCHOOLS VISIT 2019
3-4TH JULY, 2019
Youth Conservation Awareness Program (YCAP) has been conducting a school outreach program. We have traversed various Counties and met students from different institutions. On 3rd July, we decided to visit Kitui County for a two days mission. Kitui County is one of the ASAL regions in Kenya, and our education program is aimed at encouraging young students to adopt strategies that can help to conserve their environment.
We visited 3 primary schools in Kitui County:
1. South Eastern Maranatha Primary School
2. St Michael Boarding Primary School
3. St James Mawa Jnr Academy School
We are very grateful to the following partners who made donations that made the visits a success:
1. Cisticola Tours LTD
2. Kenya Museums Society
The following were the main activities during our school visits:
1. YCAP ESD Presentation
Our Head of Sustainability gave a presentation about YCAP’s ESD program. This presentation included the activities we have been doing with schools from different parts of the country. After the presentation, we discussed with the students and their patrons about the kind of activities they can start participating in. These include field trips, tree planting, workshops, and environmental competitions, among others. We also shared some awareness materials which the club members would share with the rest of the students in the school.
The students enjoyed a few films including a TEDx talk (Why we should all love birds) from Washington Wachira. We also had other environmental films that lightened up the student’s spirits.
Kitui County was a fantastic place to visit. We met very passionate young people and patrons who are ready to work with our ESD program. Our goal is to foster long-term relationships with the schools and to produce young people who can later contribute to conservation. Through our mentorship goal, we agreed that these schools would help other nearby schools to adopt the activities that we have taught them.
